Upcoming PDC – Rustler’s Valley, South Africa

7 Feb
2011

To be held April 6-17th, at Rustler’s Valley, Ficksburg, Eastern Free State, South Africa.

This course delivers an international permaculture design certificate(PDC) curriculum, adapted to South African conditions. These techniques have been developed by South Africans for South Africans with South Africans and have been successfully applied in all South African ecological and social sectors: Local systems that deliver food security, primary healthcare, natural resource regeneration and economic development in rural and urban landscapes.

Ferro-cement and Compost Toilet Workshops

2 Oct
2009

Ferro-cement workshopOne of Plan Africa’s principle objectives is to promote sustainable livelihoods utilising a package of solutions applicable to the Africa situation.

Plan Africa supported by Permaculture Latin America, hosted Ferro Cement Workshops and Compost Toilet Building workshops in Mozambique and South Africa in August and September 2009.

We had 47 participants in Mozambique and 36 in Bowde Village, Limpopo, South Africa.

The workshops were aimed at the permaculture development community. Artisans with experience with building and plastering were trained by three Brazilian experts in the Ferro-cement field who have been instrumental in developing thousands of  ferro-cement water tanks in Brazil.

The idea for a 1ha permaculture zone 3 dryland trial at Kasisi Agricultural Training Centre (KATC), Zambia, grew out of a small planning session between permaculturists from Africa and Ali Sharif of Permaculture Latin America (PAL) in Johannesburg in June 2008.

PAL found support for the 1st year of the trial; which aims to demonstrate with scientifically verifiable data that more value can be produced than from a monocrop of maize often aimed for in conventional farming. The trial is looking at food security, health benefits and monetary surplus. It is designed for the African landscape, utilising crops like pumpkin, cowpeas, pigeon pea, sweet potato, sorghum, beans, millet, maize, comfrey, Artemesia, and Moringa.

Welcome to Plan Africa

1 Jan
2007

Plan Africa is a new entity established to represent the dire need for sustainable design and livelihoods for Africa. Our long term goal is food security and strong regional economies on the continent. One of the ways we aim to achieve this is through this website and database detailing organic farming and permaculture projects which is easily accessible for information or contacts, for people to ask for help, or simply to connect with other like-minded people and organisations. We are also attempting to create a ‘map’ the continents sustainable development and farming projects, in order to create a comprehensive geographical picture of project locations detailing location, aims, objectives, production, methodologies and available resources.
